Yamanaka Lacquerware The origin of Yamanaka lacquerware is said to have started about 450 years ago when the technique of grinding was introduced from Echizen. Yamanaka lacquer ware is characterized by its diverse and delicate finishes, ranging from traditional patterns of flowers, birds, wind, and the moon to geometric patterns. This lacquer is an ancient Japanese painting technique that combines warmth and strength. Lacquer is known as “Japan” in English, and is recognized worldwide as one of Japan’s representative traditional crafts. Its tough coating film and structure are highly valued for their excellent water resistance and antiseptic properties. As the years go by, the lacquer on the surface becomes more and more lustrous and the taste deepens. Each piece of Honkin Maki-e is carefully finished by hand. Honkin-makie is done by drawing a picture or pattern in lacquer and sprinkling gold or silver maki-e powder before the lacquer dries. Traditional craftsmen work by hand, one by one, to create the highly sophisticated techniques that add a sense of elegance and luxury. A simple, high-quality shape that will never get old. The design with soft lines and bulges is reminiscent of the modern “natsume” tea ceremony utensils, “nakatsugi”.
